Malocclusion is a problem that affects many people. Sometimes it may be genetic, but more often it is a result of bad eating habits during childhood, especially when it comes to drinking from a bottle with a soother and sucking a finger. In this situation, the malocclusion can be effectively corrected, thus avoiding aesthetic and health problems.
Permanently installed braces
In today’s world, wearing braces is completely normal – braces are used not only by children, but also by adults.
Orthodontic braces have been used in the USA since the beginning of the 80s of the last century, it is not difficult to notice that the popularity of this type of solutions has increased significantly until today, braces are worn by children, teenagers and often also adults who want to improve their appearance.
Orthodontic treatment aims to restore proper occlusion, while reducing the risk of periodontal disease and caries. Moreover, orthodontic braces improve the aesthetics of teeth and often also facial features.
Persons who have to wear orthodontic braces should take into account the risks and limitations:
a) orthodontic braces in the oral cavity may accumulate bacterial plaque and thus require special hygiene of the oral cavity and teeth; b) wearing orthodontic braces may mean that tooth brushing is difficult;
(c) orthodontic appliances are composed of many elements, including rings, brackets, arches and ligatures, which hinder the flow of saliva and the spontaneous cleaning of teeth;
d) on the elements of orthodontic appliances, food remains may accumulate and bacteria may accumulate, which may result in the destruction of deeper layers of periodontium;
(e) orthodontic appliances destroy the microflora in the oral cavity, which may result in the accumulation of pathogenic micro-organisms and plaque
Most of the possible complications resulting from the use of braces do not cause any serious problems, and their impact on the future condition of the dentition and surrounding tissues is insignificant.
Why is oral hygiene important?
A very important issue in the case of people using orthodontic braces is proper oral hygiene – it is necessary to reach all gaps, tooth surfaces, as well as all elements of braces.
How to properly clean braces?
Proper cleaning of brackets, ligatures and arches is also an important activity – it protects the braces against discolouration and teeth against caries and cavities.
To ensure proper oral hygiene, you should use brushes, flosses, orthodontic brushes and toothpastes with a low abrasion index.
At this point, the question arises why it is so important to choose the right toothpaste during orthodontic treatment.
As we know, braces cause mechanical, long-term irritation of periodontal tissues, which may result in hypersensitivity and pain. In many cases, problems occur shortly after the braces have been fitted and last for several days, thus informing about the progressing correction of tooth alignment. In order to eliminate these ailments, it is worth using appropriate cleaning agents, i.e. toothpastes for sensitive teeth or people wearing braces – these are preparations that clean effectively and gently, and at the same time prevent the formation of caries and tartar. It is worth supplementing oral hygiene with appropriate mouth rinsing liquids.
It is worth noting that preparations for sensitive teeth also have an analgesic effect, both in case of exposure to cold and consumption of warm, sour and sweet dishes.
