On the Georgian rectangular flag there are five red crosses – the cross of St. George in its central part (the patron saint of Georgia) and four smaller crosses Bolnisi on the sides – on a white background. The white background on the flag refers to the Georgian national colour in the Middle Ages, i.e. the period when the Georgian state flourished. Crosses, on the other hand, refer to the Jerusalem cross and are supposed to symbolize Jesus Christ and the four evangelists.
